Fort Cépérou (French Guiana)

Weather…

Fort Cépérou stands atop a strategic hill overlooking the city of Cayenne and is widely regarded as the birthplace of the capital of French Guiana. Constructed in 1643 by Charles Poncet de Brétigny, the fortification was named after the local indigenous chief Cépérou, from whom the French purchased the land. Over the centuries, the fort was the site of numerous battles between French, Dutch, English, and Portuguese forces, all vying for dominance over this coastal region. The structure was destroyed and rebuilt several times; the current ruins and the distinctive pagoda-style clock tower date from later periods of reconstruction. From the fort's observation deck, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of Cayenne's historic center, the harbor, and the mouth of the Cayenne River. As a historical landmark, Fort Cépérou symbolizes the colonial history and the enduring resilience of the city.
