Château de Villandry
The Château de Villandry is the last of the great Renaissance palaces built in the Loire Valley during the 16th century, completed around 1536. Commissioned by Jean Le Breton, Finance Minister to King Francis I, it was constructed on the foundations of a 12th-century fortress, of which only the keep remains. Today, Villandry is world-renowned for its extraordinary gardens, arranged across three terraces, which are considered a masterpiece of formal landscape design. These gardens include a decorative kitchen garden, a water garden, and ornamental flower beds, all meticulously restored to their original Renaissance geometry in the early 20th century. This restoration was the life's work of Joachim Carvallo, who purchased the decaying estate in 1906 and dedicated himself to recreating its 16th-century splendor. As a key component of the Loire Valley UNESCO World Heritage site, Villandry exemplifies the excellent harmony between architecture and nature. The castle's interiors are equally impressive, featuring fine period furniture and a significant collection of Spanish paintings.
