In autumn Château de Villandry celebrates its famous ornamental vegetable garden over a friendly weekend, alongside the gardeners and a market of local producers and craftspeople.
In early August the seven hectares of gardens at Château de Villandry are lit over several evenings by more than 2000 candles, accompanied by entertainment and fireworks.
The small, architecturally cohesive village of Villandry, located near the confluence of the Loire and Cher rivers, achieved global fame almost exclusively through its eponymous château. Built in the 16th century, the Château de Villandry holds significant historical importance as the very last of the great Renaissance châteaux constructed along the Loire Valley. While the building itself displays striking elegance and proportion, it is the estate's meticulously reconstructed and fiercely maintained gardens that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. This horticultural masterpiece is structured across three distinct terraces: a serene water garden, an ornamental garden featuring precisely clipped boxwoods in symbolic shapes, and a massive, highly decorative vegetable garden (potager) where colorful cabbages, herbs, and pumpkins are planted in strict geometric patterns. The visual impact of these living tapestries shifts dramatically with each season. The village itself clings to a gentle slope, defined by traditional tuffeau stone houses topped with the slate roofs characteristic of the Touraine region. Local eateries within the village center proudly serve wines from the neighboring Bourgueil and Chinon appellations. Villandry is an absolute must-see for anyone interested in the perfection of French formal garden design.
