Bordering the historic city of Tours, La Riche is a fascinating suburb deeply entwined with French royal and literary history. Its crowning jewel is the Château de Plessis-lez-Tours, a flamboyant Gothic brick manor that once served as the favored residence of King Louis XI. Walking through its remaining wing, visitors can easily imagine the complex political machinations of the 15th-century French court. Just a short distance away lies the serene Prieuré Saint-Cosme, an ancient monastery famously associated with the Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard. The priory is surrounded by spectacular botanical gardens featuring hundreds of rose varieties, offering a fragrant and peaceful retreat first-rate for quiet contemplation. The nearby Loire and Cher rivers provide beautiful green corridors, good for relaxed cycling or afternoon picnics on the riverbanks. La Riche balances its historical significance with a lively contemporary atmosphere, hosting local markets full of fresh Touraine produce. Its proximity to Tours makes it an incredibly convenient yet tranquil base for exploring the broader chateaux region.
