Portet-sur-Garonne is a thriving commune in southwestern France, located on the southern outskirts of Toulouse. Its most distinctive geographic feature is its position at the confluence of the Garonne and Ariège rivers, a site of significant ecological value that is part of a protected regional nature reserve. Historically, Portet served as a river port, facilitating trade and transport in the Languedoc region. The historic district, known as 'Vieux Portet', features characterful red-brick architecture typical of the Toulouse area, including the 14th-century Saint-Martin church with its distinctive 'clocher-mur' (wall belfry). In the modern era, the town has become synonymous with economic vitality, hosting one of the largest commercial zones in the Occitanie region, including the 'Grand Portet' mall. This commercial success is balanced by a commitment to green urbanism, with extensive parks, cycling paths, and riverfront leisure areas. Portet-sur-Garonne acts as a gateway between the metropolitan buzz of Toulouse and the scenic routes leading toward the Pyrenees mountains.
