Fontenilles, located in the Haute-Garonne department, is a pretty village that has firmly retained its rural character despite its close proximity to the city of Toulouse. The heart of the municipality is the historic Saint-Médard church, whose massive 15th-century brick tower rises high above the roofs of the residential houses. The building combines both Romanesque and Gothic architectural elements and is a typical example of the fortified church style found in the southern French Toulouse region. Traditional red-brick houses are grouped around the old church square, giving the center a cozy and warm atmosphere. The extensive agricultural lands and small woodland areas surrounding Fontenilles are crossed by a dense network of cycling and hiking trails, which attract many nature lovers, especially on weekends. Stopping by the village's old communal washhouse (lavoir), visitors can easily imagine the daily life of residents in past centuries. An artisanal bakery and a bustling Sunday market provide locals and travelers alike with regional specialties, such as crusty baguettes and flavorful cheeses. Fontenilles is a peaceful retreat with the genuine charm of the Gascony border.
