Mauléon is a town of profound historical significance located in the Deux-Sèvres department of western France. The current municipality is unique for its 1965 formation, which saw the merger of seven distinct parishes, including the historic Châtillon-sur-Sèvre, into a single expansive community. Historically, Mauléon was a vital strategic stronghold, particularly during the turbulent times of the Wars of Religion and the Vendée Revolt. Its architectural landscape is dominated by the majestic ruins of its medieval castle, perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Ouin River. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Mauléon emerged as a major center for leatherwork and the footwear industry, which shaped its modern urban character and economic resilience. Recognized as a 'Petite Cité de Caractère', the town is celebrated for its well-preserved heritage, including the Trinity Abbey and several aristocratic townhouses. The surrounding landscape, known as the 'Bocage', has a scenic setting for hiking and rural tourism. Today, Mauléon remains a dynamic regional hub, blending its rich industrial and military past with a modern focus on culture, tourism, and community well-being.
