Located at the western edge of the grand Versailles estate, Saint-Cyr-l'École is a town whose identity is forever intertwined with French military and educational history. Its very name evokes the legendary Maison Royale de Saint-Louis, founded here in 1684 by Madame de Maintenon for the impoverished daughters of noblemen, which later transformed into the prestigious École Spéciale Militaire under Napoleon Bonaparte. While the main military academy relocated to Brittany following severe damage during World War II, the imposing architectural complex still proudly hosts a renowned military high school (Lycée Militaire). Visitors walking through the town can feel this disciplined heritage in the grand, uniform architecture and broad avenues. Beyond its military past, the town also holds a significant place in aviation history, featuring a historic airfield where early pioneers tested experimental aircraft. Today, it is a well-connected, orderly community that provides an uncrowded alternative for exploring the greater Versailles area, boasting lovely green corridors and a solemn, monumental atmosphere that history buffs will highly appreciate.
