Versailles palace town (France)

Weather…

The Palace of Versailles is one of the world's most famous monuments, representing the absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime. Built by Louis XIV, the 'Sun King', it transformed a hunting lodge into a sprawling complex of 2,300 rooms. The Hall of Mirrors, where the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, remains the architectural highlight, featuring 357 mirrors and golden decorations that celebrate French triumphs. The estate encompasses 800 hectares, including the meticulously designed French gardens by André Le Nôtre, the Grand Canal, and the fountains that still operate using hydraulic systems from the 17th century. Beyond the main palace, the Trianon estate and the Hameau de la Reine (Queen's Hamlet) offer a more intimate look at the lives of Marie Antoinette and the royal family, featuring rustic cottages and pastoral landscapes. Versailles is located about 20 km from central Paris and is easily accessible via the RER C train. Due to its popularity, booking tickets in advance is mandatory. While the palace is remarkable year-round, the 'Musical Fountains Shows' held from April to October provide the best experience of the park's grandeur. The town itself has elegant markets and high-end French cuisine near the Notre-Dame district.
