Trappes is located in the Yvelines department, approximately 30 kilometers west of central Paris. Historically a farming village, its trajectory changed in the late 19th century with the establishment of one of France's largest railway marshaling yards, which spurred industrial growth. Today, it is a key pillar of the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines new town area. The city is characterized by its modern urban planning and significant green spaces, most notably the Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines leisure island, which straddles the town border and includes a large reservoir and a nature reserve. Trappes is economically diverse, hosting sectors ranging from advanced manufacturing to logistics. It is also celebrated as a cultural hub, having produced numerous famous figures in French cinema, music, and sports, reflecting the town's focus on youth engagement and community programs.
