From April to October the historic fountains of the Versailles gardens come to life set to Baroque music, a highlight of any palace visit.
Versailles, located southwest of Paris, is inseparable from its world-famous palace, one of the most magnificent examples of French Baroque architecture. Originally a simple hunting lodge for Louis XIII, it was transformed under Louis XIV, the "Sun King," into the official residence of the French monarchy and the absolute center of political power. The city of Versailles was meticulously planned to accommodate the royal court and government administration. The palace is renowned for its spectacular Hall of Mirrors, the lavish Royal Apartments, and the vast formal gardens designed by André Le Nôtre. Versailles has been the site of pivotal historical moments, including the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871 and the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which concluded World War I. Today, the entire estate is a UNESCO World Heritage site and remains one of the most visited cultural landmarks in the world, symbolizing the zenith of French royal splendor. In 2024, the Palace of Versailles hosted the Olympic equestrian and modern pentathlon events, with dressage, show jumping and eventing held in the palace grounds.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
