Marly-le-Roi is a town of profound historical significance, serving as the private sanctuary of King Louis XIV away from the rigid etiquette of Versailles. The king’s motto 'Marly, c'est moi' reflected his personal connection to the estate. Although the magnificent château was dismantled after the French Revolution, the National Estate of Marly remains a spectacular public park, featuring the original layout of gardens and the famous 'Abreuvoir' (watering trough). The town gained worldwide fame in the 17th century for the 'Machine de Marly', a colossal hydraulic engineering marvel used to pump water from the Seine to the royal fountains. The 'Vieux Marly' district is exceptionally well-preserved, offering a glimpse into life under the Ancien Régime with its narrow streets and period architecture. In the 1800s, it became a focal point for Impressionist painters like Alfred Sisley, who captured its unique light and scenery. Modern Marly is an affluent residential area known for its excellent schools, spirited cultural life, and the preservation of its royal heritage, making it one of the most desirable locations in the western suburbs of Paris.
