Highlights of 2026

1

Located on the left bank of the Seine in the Yvelines department, Le Port-Marly is deeply intertwined with 19th-century French literature and art. The undisputed highlight of the town is the Château de Monte-Cristo, built in 1846 by the novelist Alexandre Dumas following the massive success of his historical adventure books. This extravagant three-story residence blends Gothic and Renaissance architectural elements and is set within a lush English-style landscape garden featuring waterfalls and the Château d'If, a small Moorish pavilion used as his writing studio. The riverside setting also captivated the early Impressionist painters, most notably Alfred Sisley, who painted his famous “Flood at Port-Marly” here in 1876. Walking along the well-maintained river promenade provides views of the historic locks, old docks, and modern residential houseboats swaying on the water. The town center retains its old-world atmosphere, centered around the Church of Saint-Louis, consecrated in 1853. Bordering the vast 3,500-hectare forest of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, the municipality serves as a very practical starting point for exploring the former royal hunting grounds on foot or by bicycle. Originally discovered as a summer retreat by the Parisian bourgeoisie during the Belle Époque, the area has successfully preserved its elegant, tranquil character.
