Petite-Forêt is a commune in northern France, directly bordering the city of Valenciennes. The town is a classic example of economic transformation in the Hauts-de-France region. Originally part of the northern French mining basin, the town was closely tied to coal extraction. After the end of the mining era in the 1970s, Petite-Forêt reinvented itself and developed into a major commercial and service center. Today, the municipality is primarily known for its vast commercial zone, which includes one of the region's largest shopping centers, attracting customers from a wide area. In addition to trade, the town maintains an industrial character, particularly through the automotive and railway manufacturing industries (Alstom) located in the immediate vicinity. Despite heavy urbanization and its convenient location along the A23 motorway, Petite-Forêt has made efforts to maintain green spaces and improve the quality of life in its residential neighborhoods. Culturally, the town is embedded in the rich history of the Hainaut region.
