Marly, often referred to as Marly-lez-Valenciennes to distinguish it from its namesakes, is a key commune in the Valenciennes metropolitan area. The town transitioned from a mainly agricultural settlement in the Middle Ages to an industrial powerhouse in the 19th and 20th centuries, particularly in metallurgy and mechanical engineering. Geographically, it lies on the flat, fertile plains of Hainaut, which encouraged the establishment of factories and residential zones. Following the decline of heavy industry, Marly has reinvented itself as an attractive residential area with modern infrastructure. The architecture features a mix of traditional workers' housing and contemporary urban development projects. Culturally, the town has the Millénium, a modern event center, and emphasizes quality of life through numerous parks and sports facilities that dot the landscape.
