Aniche is a historic industrial town in the Nord department, situated near the city of Douai. Its development was fueled by the industrial revolution, during which it became a major hub for coal mining within the Nord-Pas-de-Calais mining basin. At its peak, the town operated eleven different coal shafts, shaping the local economy and social structure for generations. In addition to mining, Aniche earned international acclaim as a leading center for glass manufacturing. The establishment of the Saint-Martin glassworks in 1823 marked the beginning of an era that saw the town produce high-quality flat glass for markets across Europe. Today, Aniche's industrial landscape is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. The urban fabric is dominated by traditional red-brick workers' housing, known as 'corons,' and remnants of its industrial past. Despite the transition away from heavy industry, the town remains committed to preserving its unique heritage and mining culture.
