Located in the heart of the Ostrevent region, Dechy is a town that bears the profound marks of northern France's epic coal mining era. For over a century, the community was entirely shaped by the extraction of black gold, and today it sits within the perimeter of the Nord-Pas de Calais Mining Basin, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage landscape. While the towering headframes have largely disappeared from the immediate center, the surrounding landscape is still dotted with iconic terrils (slag heaps), which have remarkably transformed into rich, green nature reserves offering excellent hiking and panoramic views. Walking through the streets of Dechy, visitors can observe the traditional corons, the symmetrical red-brick houses built for the miners and their families, representing a unique architectural and social history. The town has heavily invested in green spaces and modern facilities while keeping its working-class heritage alive through local associations and monuments. It is an insightful stop for travelers wanting to understand the authentic industrial soul of the Hauts-de-France region before exploring the nearby historic center of Douai.
