Château de Chambord is the largest and most magnificent of the Loire Valley castles, built in the 16th century for King Francis I as a grand hunting lodge. Its architecture represents a unique fusion of French Renaissance forms with traditional medieval structures. A central and iconic feature is the double-helix staircase, whose design is often attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, allowing two people to ascend and descend simultaneously without meeting. The castle's roofline is equally famous for its hundreds of ornate chimneys and turrets, resembling a stylized skyline of a miniature city. Surrounding the monumental building is a vast park enclosed by a 32-kilometer-long wall, making it one of the largest enclosed forest areas in Europe. Despite its enormous scale, featuring 440 rooms, Francis I spent very little time here, as the project was primarily intended to showcase his royal power and prestige. During the French Revolution, the castle was looted, but extensive restoration in the 19th and 20th centuries saved the structure. Today, the estate is a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts visitors from around the globe who come to admire the opulent halls and the endless hunting grounds.
