Meung-sur-Loire is an illustrious town situated on the northern bank of the Loire River, approximately 20 kilometers from Orléans. Its history is deeply intertwined with the Catholic Church, as the Chateau de Meung served as the summer palace for the Bishops of Orléans for nearly 800 years. The castle is architecturally significant for its 'two-faced' design: a formidable medieval fortress on one side and an elegant 18th-century classical residence on the other. Nearby, the 11th-century Collegiate Church of Saint-Liphard stands as a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. Meung-sur-Loire holds a distinguished place in French literature as the birthplace of Jean de Meun, co-author of the medieval masterpiece 'The Romance of the Rose'. The town also appears in the opening scenes of Dumas's 'The Three Musketeers' and is the fictional retirement home of Georges Simenon's Inspector Maigret. Geographically, the town is graced by the Mauve River, which once powered dozens of watermills, creating a network of scenic streams through the town center. Today, Meung-sur-Loire is a lively cultural hub within the UNESCO World Heritage area of the Loire Valley, attracting visitors with its historic gardens, renowned markets, and its prime location along the 'Loire à Vélo' cycling trail.
