Located in the heart of the Indre department, Issoudun is a historic town that seamlessly blends medieval heritage with quiet provincial charm. Its most striking landmark is the Tour Blanche, a massive 12th-century defensive keep built by Richard the Lionheart. Climbing this ancient tower rewards visitors with sweeping views across the rooftops and the surrounding Berry countryside. Below the tower, the medieval alleyways wind through the old town, leading to the remarkable Hospice Saint-Roch. This former hospital complex now serves as a fascinating museum, housing everything from ancient apothecary jars to contemporary art, and features a panoramic sculpture garden. Issoudun was also a favored retreat for the famous French novelist Honoré de Balzac, who found inspiration in its tranquil atmosphere. The surrounding region is characterized by rolling agricultural fields and small vineyards, making it convenient for peaceful country drives. A visit here isn't complete without sampling the local green lentil dishes or a glass of regional Reuilly wine in a traditional brasserie.
