Gien is a pleasant town in the heart of France, picturesquely situated on the right bank of the Loire. The history of the settlement dates back to Gallo-Roman times, but its heyday began in the Middle Ages under the rule of the Counts of Gien. The most prominent building is the Château de Gien, built in the 15th century for Anne de Beaujeu, daughter of Louis XI. It is one of the few castles in the Loire Valley constructed predominantly of red brick. Since 1952, it has housed the International Hunting Museum, which displays an impressive collection on the history of hunting and natural science. Another pillar of local identity is the 'Faïencerie de Gien', founded in 1821 by the Englishman Thomas Hall. The factory is still known today for its high-quality, hand-painted ceramics, which are exported worldwide. Despite heavy destruction in June 1940 during the Western campaign, the town center was rebuilt in a harmonious regional style that respects the architectural heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region.
The most pleasant time to visit is Jun–Aug.
