Cluny is a town of immense historical significance located in the Burgundy region. It is famous worldwide for the Abbey of Cluny, founded in 910 AD, which led the Cluniac Reform and became the epicenter of Western monasticism. At its height, the abbey oversaw thousands of monasteries and its main church was the largest in Christendom until the construction of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Significant parts of the complex were demolished after the French Revolution, but the remaining ruins, combined with digital reconstructions, offer a powerful glimpse into its former grandeur. Modern Cluny is also renowned for its National Stud (Haras National), established by Napoleon in 1806, and its elite engineering school, Arts et Métiers. The town center is a maze of Romanesque and Gothic houses, many dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. Positioned in the Grosne valley, Cluny remains a major cultural hub, blending its medieval legacy with an animated student life and high-level equestrian events.
