Montbrison, located at the foot of the Monts du Forez, is a city of great historical and cultural significance. As the former capital of the County of Forez, it preserves a rich architectural heritage, most notably the collegiate church of Notre-Dame-d'Espérance, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture whose construction spanned over two centuries. The city is a true paradise for gourmets. Fourme de Montbrison, a blue cheese with a protected designation of origin, has been produced here since the Middle Ages. An absolute highlight is the weekly market held every Saturday, which was voted France's most beautiful market in 2019. It reflects the region's lively agricultural tradition. Geographically, Montbrison is the gateway to the Livradois-Forez Regional Nature Park, making it a good starting point for hiking and nature experiences. The Vizézy river flows through the city, its banks lined with historic buildings. The Diana House, a 13th-century heraldry museum, bears witness to the heraldic history of the local nobility. Today, the city combines its role as a historic center with dynamic development as a sub-prefecture of the Loire department.
