Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert is a twin-town municipality in the Loire department, formed in 1973 through the union of two distinct riverside communities. Saint-Just-sur-Loire was historically famous as a bustling river port where 'rambertes', disposable flat-bottomed boats, were built and loaded with coal from nearby Saint-Étienne to be shipped down the Loire. In contrast, Saint-Rambert-sur-Loire is a much older settlement, founded around a medieval abbey, characterized by fortified walls and narrow cobblestone streets. This merger has resulted in a town that bridges the gap between industrial progress and ancient religious heritage. The local Museum of Civilizations is a cultural highlight, housing an eclectic collection that spans from regional history to international ethnography. Situated at the gateway to the Loire Gorges, the town serves as a scenic hub for hiking and water-based recreation. Its modern economy is well-integrated with the Saint-Étienne metropolitan area, making it a thriving residential and commercial center.
