Weather…

The Hauts Plateaux du Vercors Nature Reserve is the largest terrestrial nature reserve in mainland France, covering an area of approximately 17,000 hectares. Established in 1985, it is located at the core of the Vercors Regional Natural Park in the French Prealps. The landscape is defined by wild limestone plateaus, deep gorges, and dense forests, with elevations ranging from 1,000 to 2,300 meters. There are no permanent settlements, roads, or public utilities within the reserve, ensuring the preservation of exceptional biodiversity. Hikers can encounter rare species such as the Alpine ibex, griffon vultures, and black grouse. The region is also noted for its significant karst features and extensive cave systems, which are of great interest for geological research.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The vast nature reserve is typically accessed on foot from surrounding gateway villages, as motorized vehicles are generally strictly prohibited completely inside.
📅
Best season
Late spring to early autumn is usually the best window for hiking this pristine landscape, as harsh winter conditions typically make access very difficult.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The high plateau is characterized by vast open spaces, limestone pavements, and deep forests; trails can sometimes be faint and demand good navigation skills.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy backpacking boots are typically essential. Because there is very little surface water, carrying a large supply of drinking water is usually critical.
🅿️
Parking
Vehicles must generally be left at designated parking zones in the peripheral villages before visitors continue their journey on foot entirely into the reserve.
⚠️
Safety
The pristine nature of the plateau means mobile reception is usually non-existent; excellent map-reading skills and a compass are typically strongly recommended.
⏱️
Time needed
While a day hike typically features a brief glimpse, fully experiencing this vast and remote plateau usually requires a multi-day backpacking expedition.
