Firminy is a city in the Loire department, situated southwest of Saint-Étienne in the Ondaine valley. Historically, it was a major hub for coal mining and steel production, fueling France's industrial growth during the 19th century. However, its international reputation today rests on the 'Site Le Corbusier,' the largest collection of buildings designed by the legendary architect Le Corbusier in Europe. This project, known as 'Firminy-Vert,' was an ambitious urban planning experiment aimed at providing a high-quality living environment for workers. The ensemble includes the Maison de la Culture, a stadium, a massive housing block (Unité d'Habitation), and the Saint-Pierre Church, whose striking conical design was completed posthumously in 2006. These works are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Firminy has transitioned from its industrial roots to a city focused on cultural tourism, education, and services. The surrounding landscape, characterized by the rugged terrain of the Massif Central's outskirts, gives a stark but beautiful contrast to the bold, geometric forms of the modernist architecture within the city.
