Kankaanpää Church (Finland)

Weather…

Kankaanpää Church is an impressive example of Finnish Neoclassicism, completed in 1839. It was designed by Carl Ludvig Engel, the architect responsible for Helsinki's city center, which is reflected in its monumental and clean formal language. The church is a solid construction made of fieldstone and brick, distinguishing it from the many wooden churches in the area. The building is designed as a cruciform church with a central dome, providing the interior with a sense of vastness and light. The altarpiece, 'Christ in Gethsemane', was painted by Berndt Godenhjelm in 1845. The church serves as the architectural centerpiece of Kankaanpää and is part of an ensemble that includes a historical cemetery. In the 1970s, the interior underwent a comprehensive restoration to recover Engel's original color scheme. It is regarded as one of the most architecturally significant churches in the Satakunta region.
