Isojoki is located in the southern part of the South Ostrobothnia region and is famous for its striking geological features and vast woodlands. The municipality is home to Lauhanvuori National Park, which contains the highest point in Western Finland, an ancient peak that emerged after the last Ice Age. Geographically, the area is defined by the Isojoki River valley, renowned for its trout, and extensive mire ecosystems. Historically, Isojoki gained independence as a municipality in the mid-19th century, with agriculture and forestry serving as the traditional economic mainstays. A notable and somber part of local lore is the unsolved 1953 murder of Kyllikki Saari, a mystery that remains one of Finland's most famous cold cases. Today, Isojoki focuses on eco-tourism and is a key part of the Lauhanvuori-Hämeenkangas UNESCO Global Geopark.
