Hailuoto is located off the coast of Oulu and is accessible by ferry or, during winter, via a unique ice road. The island was formed by post-glacial rebound and continues to expand in size every year. Its most iconic landmark is the Marjaniemi lighthouse, built in 1871, adjacent to a traditional fishing village with its characteristic red wooden huts. The terrain is characterized by expansive sandy beaches, lichen-covered pine forests, and wetlands that serve as vital nesting grounds for rare bird species. Visitors are drawn to the island for its profound silence and pristine environment. During the summer, the beaches of Pöllä and Sunijärvi are excellent for hiking, while local eateries serve freshly caught fish, particularly vendace. Cultural heritage is preserved through the 'Hailuoto sweater', a traditional woolen garment knitted by locals for generations. The local museum provides insights into the resilient island life of past centuries, shaped by the sea and the isolation of the northern Baltic.
