Standing 52 meters above the Baltic Sea, Bengtskär is the tallest lighthouse in the Nordic countries and a majestic symbol of Finnish maritime history. Built in 1906 using massive local granite blocks, it was designed to protect ships from the treacherous rocky shallows. The island has a dramatic history, most notably the Battle of Bengtskär in 1941, when Finnish forces successfully defended the tower from a Soviet invasion attempt; bullet holes from the fighting are still visible on the exterior. Climbing the 252 steps to the lantern room rewards visitors with an unparalleled view of the open sea and the surrounding archipelago. The island itself is a windswept granite skerry, devoid of trees but teeming with life during the nesting season of hundreds of eider ducks. The lighthouse building contains a museum, a chapel, a cozy cafe, and six guest rooms for those seeking an overnight adventure. Due to its exposed location, boat trips from Hanko or Kasnäs are weather-dependent, making every visit a unique experience.
