Hanko, located at the tip of the peninsula of the same name, is Finland's sunniest city. Since the late 19th century, it served as a fashionable spa resort for the Russian elite, evidenced today by the magnificent wooden villas in the villa district. Boasting over 130 km of coastline, with 30 km consisting of fine sandy beaches, it is the premier summer destination for swimmers and windsurfers. The city's landmark is the red water tower, offering panoramic views of the Baltic Sea from its top. The harbor is the heart of the city, especially during the Hanko Regatta in July when social life peaks. Nature lovers visit the Tulliniemi Nature Reserve, the southernmost point of mainland Finland, to observe migratory birds. Local gastronomy features freshly caught fish and the famous 'Hanko cake'. Access is convenient by train or car from Helsinki in about two hours. The best time to visit is from June to August, when the city truly comes alive.
