Amos Rex
Amos Rex is one of Helsinki's most innovative art museums, seamlessly blending historical functionalism with avant-garde underground design. Opened in 2018, the museum is located beneath the Lasipalatsi (Glass Palace), a 1936 functionalist landmark in the city center. The most striking feature of the museum is its undulating roofscape on the Lasipalatsi Square, where cone-shaped domes with large circular windows protrude from the ground. These domes act as skylights for the vast subterranean exhibition galleries while creating a popular public space for social interaction above ground. Designed by JKMM Architects, the museum provides approximately 2,200 square meters of state-of-the-art gallery space. Amos Rex focuses on contemporary art, interactive digital installations, and 20th-century Modernist classics. Its inaugural exhibition by the Japanese collective teamLab was a global sensation, setting record attendance figures for Finnish museums. Today, it remains a testament to how urban architecture can evolve to create subterranean cultural hubs in densely populated city centers.
