Jimma Abba Jifar Palace (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The palace of Abba Jifar II in Jimma is an outstanding example of Oromo palace architecture from the late 19th century. Abba Jifar II was the most powerful ruler of the Kingdom of Jimma, reigning from 1878 to 1932. The complex was built around 1880 and combines local building traditions with architectural influences from India and Europe. The palace is constructed primarily of wood and local stone, including residential buildings, a mosque, and administrative rooms. Particularly impressive are the intricately carved window frames and the massive wooden columns supporting the roof. Under Abba Jifar, Jimma was a major center for the coffee and slave trades, which brought the king great wealth. Despite the kingdom's incorporation into the Ethiopian Empire, the palace retained its symbolic importance for Oromo culture. Today, the complex serves as a museum and provides insights into the regional feudal history.
