Travelers are drawn to Lake Ziway primarily for its exceptional wildlife and serene boating experiences. As one of the freshwater lakes in the Ethiopian Rift Valley, it is an absolute paradise for bird watchers. Large flocks of pelicans, marabou storks, and fish eagles are commonly seen skimming the water's surface or resting on the shores. The lake also hosts a significant population of hippopotamuses, which can be safely observed on guided boat tours. The lake is dotted with five volcanic islands, the most famous being Tullu Gudo. This island houses the ancient Maryam Tsion monastery and is reputedly the place where the Ark of the Covenant was hidden during the invasion of Queen Yodit. The scenic shores are fringed with papyrus reeds and fig trees, providing an excellent backdrop for nature photography. Gastronomy in the town of Ziway (Batu) heavily revolves around freshly caught tilapia, often fried and served whole with spicy sauces and fresh bread. Easily accessible, Ziway is located right on the main highway south of Addis Ababa, making it a convenient stopover. It is a year-round destination, though the birdlife is particularly abundant from November to March when migratory species arrive.
