Lake Langano stands out among Ethiopia's Rift Valley lakes as one of the few that are entirely free of bilharzia, making it safe for swimming and water sports. Its brownish-red waters, colored by minerals, contrast beautifully with the surrounding green woodlands and the Arsi Mountains in the background. It is a favored weekend getaway for Addis Ababa residents and international travelers looking to relax in nature. The lake's shores are lined with several comfortable lodges and resorts, offering a range of activities such as sailing, water skiing, and horseback riding. The surrounding forests are a haven for birdwatchers, with a rich diversity of species, as well as baboons, warthogs, and occasionally hippos. Local dining mostly centers around the resorts, where fresh fish from the lake is a common and delicious feature on the menu, alongside traditional Ethiopian and international cuisine. Situated about 200 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, Lake Langano is easily accessible by a well-paved road, with the journey taking roughly three to four hours. The best time to visit is from October to February, when the weather is warm and dry, providing excellent conditions for outdoor activities and lakeside relaxation.
