Danakil Depression (Ethiopia)

Weather…

The Danakil Depression is one of the lowest and hottest points on Earth, located in the Afar Triangle of northern Ethiopia. Sitting at approximately 125 meters below sea level, it is a product of the tectonic forces of the Afar Triple Junction, where the Earth's crust is thinning as plates pull apart. The region is characterized by surreal landscapes, including the multicolored hydrothermal fields of Dallol, where sulfur, potash, and salt deposits create a kaleidoscope of neon yellows and oranges. It holds the record for the highest average annual temperature ever recorded for an inhabited place, with heat often exceeding 50°C during the peak summer months. For centuries, the local Afar people have endured these conditions to mine 'white gold' or salt from the ancient lake beds, transporting it by camel caravan to the Ethiopian highlands. Scientists view the Danakil as a prime location for astrobiological research, as its extreme acidity and heat mimic conditions found on early Earth and other celestial bodies like Mars.
