Hluti is a small but strategically important settlement in the southern Shiselweni District, just a few kilometers from South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. The town sits at around 700 meters elevation in rolling hill country dotted with acacia and marula trees. Historically Hluti grew out of a mission station founded in the late 19th century by Scandinavian missionaries of the Free Evangelical Lutheran Church, whose legacy is still visible in the region's network of schools and hospitals. Economically Hluti is primarily a center for traditional cattle ranching: the Nguni cow, a hardy African breed with distinctively patterned hides, has been raised here for generations and is both an economic and a cultural symbol. Maize, groundnuts and beans also play an important role. The nearby Lavumisa border crossing makes Hluti an informal trading hub where livestock, maize and consumer goods are exchanged across the border. The surrounding area features the unusual rock formations of Mahamba Gorge and traditional Swazi villages with their characteristic beehive huts.
