Getting there
The gorge is accessible via secondary dirt roads diverting from the main highway networks near the southern border town of Mahamba. Reaching the most spectacular viewpoints typically involves a short but focused local hike.
Best season
The cooler dry winter months from May to August are generally optimal, providing clear skies and comfortable hiking conditions. The rainy summer months can make the unpaved access paths extremely slippery and somewhat treacherous.

The environment is defined by dramatic, steep-sided mountain walls where the river has sharply carved its path. The trails leading down to the water or up to overlooks are often rocky, uneven, and involve steep gradients.
What to bring
Durable hiking boots with aggressive grip are essential for safely negotiating the steep and rocky gorge pathways. Carry ample drinking water, as the climb back out of the gorge can be demanding, and bring a camera for the vistas.
