Viidumäe Nature Reserve (Estonia)

Weather…

Viidumäe Nature Reserve is located in the western part of Saaremaa Island and stands as the island's oldest and highest protected area. Established in 1957, the reserve was created to safeguard unique botanical species and geological features. Its centerpiece is Viidu Hill, which at 54 meters above sea level is the highest point on Saaremaa, representing an ancient shoreline of the Ancylus Lake. The reserve is internationally significant for being the only habitat in the world for the Saaremaa Yellow Rattle (Rhinanthus osiliensis), an endemic plant. The landscape consists of spring fens, pine forests, and limestone-rich soils that support a vast array of wild orchids. Observation towers and educational trails provide insights into this delicate ecosystem, which remains a cornerstone of Baltic environmental conservation.
