Bahariya Oasis is situated about 360 kilometers southwest of Cairo in a large depression of the Western Desert. Geologically, it is defined by black basalt and volcanic hills that mark the transition to the nearby Black Desert. The oasis gained global fame in 1996 with the discovery of the 'Valley of the Golden Mummies,' where archaeologists unearthed over 250 lavishly decorated mummies dating back to the Greco-Roman period. Bahariya has a long historical record reaching back to the Middle Kingdom and houses significant sites such as the Temple of Alexander the Great, the only temple in Egypt dedicated to him. Economically, the region is a major producer of dates and olives and also hosts vital iron ore mines at the El-Gedida site. The stark yet impressive landscape, featuring natural hot springs and unique rock formations, makes it a popular base for desert expeditions into the neighboring White Desert.

Getting there

The oasis is generally accessible via well-maintained desert roads that connect it to Cairo and other settlements. Regular bus services and private transfers make the journey quite straightforward for most travelers.

Best season

The cooler months from late autumn to early spring are undoubtedly the best time for a visit. During high summer, the extreme desert temperatures can make daytime excursions extremely exhausting and uncomfortable.

The landscape features vast expanses of sand, rocky hills, and lush palm groves tucked away within the depression. Ground conditions vary significantly between soft sand and firm desert terrain near the hot springs.

What to bring

Lightweight, long-sleeved cotton clothing for protection against the fierce sun, along with sunglasses, are essential. Do not forget to pack a swimsuit for the hot springs and consistently carry plenty of drinking water.

Parking

Ample parking is usually available within the main settlements of the oasis and near most guesthouses. When embarking on trips into the surrounding desert, vehicles are typically parked directly at the designated campsites.

Desert tours should always be undertaken with an experienced local guide to completely avoid getting lost. Ensure you stay well-hydrated at all times and actively avoid prolonged exposure to the intense midday sun.

A visit to the oasis often requires at least two to three days to fully experience the springs and nearby desert. Many travelers choose to stay longer to embark on extended desert safaris starting from this central hub.
