Samaná Peninsula (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

The Samaná Peninsula projects into the Atlantic Ocean in the northeastern Dominican Republic, defined geographically by the Sierra de Samaná mountain range. These mountains reach elevations of up to 500 meters and drop steeply into the sea, creating a rugged coastline with numerous bays. Samaná was originally an island, later connected to the mainland by alluvial deposits from the Yuna River. Every year between January and March, Samaná Bay serves as a globally significant sanctuary for humpback whales that migrate here to calve. The region's history is notable for the 'Gulf of Arrows,' where the first violent encounter between Christopher Columbus and the Ciguayo people occurred in 1493. Today, the peninsula is a hub for ecotourism, famous for Los Haitises National Park and the El Limón waterfall. The humid tropical climate supports dense vegetation, with coconut palm plantations dominating the landscape.
