Cayo Levantado (Dominican Republic)

Weather…

Cayo Levantado is a small island located in Samaná Bay, approximately five kilometers off the coast of the Samaná Peninsula in the northeastern Dominican Republic. The island covers an area of about one square kilometer and is geologically a coral outcrop elevated by tectonic activity. It gained international recognition as 'Bacardi Island' after television commercials for the rum brand were filmed there in the 1970s. Cayo Levantado is divided into two distinct zones: a public area featuring beaches and a private section occupied by a resort complex. Between January and March, the waters surrounding the island become a prime spot for observing humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae), which migrate to the bay's warm waters to mate and give birth. The island's vegetation is dominated by coconut palms and tropical coastal flora, while the surrounding coral reefs host a diverse range of marine life.
