Boca Chica is a major tourist destination in the Santo Domingo province, located about 30 kilometers east of the capital of the Dominican Republic. The town developed in the 1920s around a sugar mill but soon became a popular weekend getaway for the elite of Santo Domingo. Boca Chica is primarily known for its shallow, crystal-clear lagoon, protected from the Caribbean Sea waves by a large coral reef. This makes the beach one of the most family-friendly spots in the country. Besides tourism, the port of Andrés plays a significant economic role for the import and export of goods. The town has a mix of large hotel resorts and local seafood restaurants along the shoreline. Despite heavy commercialization, Boca Chica remains an animated place where international tourists and locals mingle, especially during holidays and weekends.
