Yding Skovhøj (Denmark)

Weather…

Yding Skovhøj is one of the highest points in Denmark, reaching an elevation of 172.54 meters above sea level in the East Jutland region. This total height includes the central of three Bronze Age burial mounds situated at the summit; without these man-made structures, the natural height is 170.77 meters. This makes it the second-highest natural point in the country, just centimeters lower than Møllehøj. The landscape was shaped during the Weichselian glaciation, characterized by significant moraine deposits left by retreating ice sheets approximately 12,000 years ago. The surrounding terrain features undulating hills and deep valleys typical of the Danish lake district near Skanderborg. Historically, the burial mounds date to the Early Bronze Age (1800-1000 BC), signifying the long-standing cultural importance of high elevations for ancient settlers. Today, the area is a protected natural site, offering expansive views of the Gudenå valley and serving as a key landmark for geographical education and outdoor recreation in Jutland.
