Skanderborg Lake (Denmark)

Weather…

Skanderborg Lake is one of the largest and deepest lakes in the Danish Lakeland (Søhøjlandet), covering an area of approximately 8.6 square kilometers. It is part of the Gudenå river system and consists of several basins, including Hylke Lake and Store Sø. The maximum depth reaches about 15 meters, making it an ecologically stable body of water with a rich population of fish such as pike, perch, and zander. Historically, the area is closely linked to Skanderborg Castle, of which only the castle church remains today; it once served as a royal residence for Kings Frederick II and Christian IV. The shoreline is the venue for the annual 'Smukfest' music festival, which has attracted tens of thousands of visitors since 1980. The lake also provides diverse opportunities for water sports, particularly sailing and rowing, as well as well-developed hiking trails through the adjacent beech forests. Water quality is continuously monitored to maintain its role as a key recreational area and habitat.
