Haderslev is located in Southern Jutland at the head of the Haderslev Fjord, boasting a rich medieval and Danish-German shared history. The cityscape is dominated by the impressive Haderslev Cathedral, built in the 13th century and widely regarded as one of Denmark's finest Gothic churches. Haderslev played a pivotal role during the Reformation; King Christian III began introducing Lutheranism here as early as 1526, years before it was established in the rest of the country. The historic old town is characterized by well-preserved townhouses dating from the 16th to the 19th centuries. Geographically, the town is shaped by its position in a valley featuring the Haderslev Dam, a large dammed lake that separates the city center from the surrounding countryside. Due to its border location, Haderslev was part of the German Empire (Schleswig-Holstein province) from 1864 to 1920, leaving a lasting mark on local culture and architecture. Today, it serves as a key educational center and a base for the Danish Army.
