Skanderborg is located in the heart of the Danish Lake District (Søhøjlandet), surrounded by an idyllic landscape of hills and lakes. The town is most famous for 'Smukfest', Denmark's second-largest music festival, held every August in a beautiful beech forest. Skanderborg Lake provides numerous activities for water enthusiasts, ranging from kayaking to scenic boat trips aboard the historic 'Dagmar'. Historically, the town was a significant royal seat. Of the original Skanderborg Castle, only the castle chapel remains today, perched on a hill overlooking the town. Hikers and cyclists will find excellent trails in the surrounding forests, such as Dyrehaven. The Skanderborg Museum provides insights into the region's past, including the German bunker headquarters from World War II located in the park. Its excellent rail and road links to nearby Aarhus make Skanderborg an attractive destination for both commuters and day-trippers.
