Fakse Kalkbrud (Denmark)

Weather…

Fakse Kalkbrud, located in eastern Zealand, is one of Denmark's most significant geological sites. It is a fossilized coral reef that formed approximately 63 million years ago during the Danian age, an epoch following the extinction of the dinosaurs. The limestone quarry covers an area of about 150 hectares and reaches a depth of up to 45 meters below the surrounding terrain. Geologically, the reef is exceptionally well-preserved, offering insights into a marine ecosystem that once existed in a deep, warm sea. Over 500 different species of fossils, including corals, shark teeth, crabs, and nautiluses, have been identified here by researchers. The industrial extraction of limestone in Fakse began as early as the Middle Ages and was a decisive economic factor for the region for centuries. Today, the quarry is both an active industrial site and a popular destination for fossil hunters and tourists, complemented by the nearby Geomuseum Faxe.
