Skjern River (Denmark)

Weather…

The Skjern Å in Western Jutland is Denmark's largest river by discharge, averaging 30 cubic meters of water per second. Its history is intimately linked with one of Europe's most ambitious nature restoration projects, carried out between 1999 and 2003. During the 1960s, the river had been straightened and the surrounding wetlands drained for agricultural use, leading to disastrous consequences for local biodiversity. By restoring its original meanders and creating vast floodplains, a dynamic ecosystem was established that now once again supports a wide array of species. The river is particularly famous for the Skjern Å salmon, a genetically unique population that was nearly extinct but has since successfully recovered. The Skjern Å delta today consists of a landscape of lakes, reed beds, and wet meadows that are of international significance for waterfowl. The region attracts many anglers and nature enthusiasts who value the reclaimed wilderness of Western Denmark.
