Skjern Å Delta (Denmark)

Weather…

The Skjern Å Delta in West Jutland is the centerpiece of the largest nature restoration project in Northern Europe. During the 1960s, the river was straightened and the surrounding wetlands drained for agriculture, leading to significant environmental degradation. Between 1999 and 2003, the Skjern Å was returned to its original meandering course, recreating a vast wetland area of approximately 2,200 hectares. Today, the delta consists of a complex system of lagoons, reed beds, and grazing meadows, supporting immense biodiversity. The region is particularly critical for the Skjern Å salmon, a genetically unique population that has successfully returned following the restoration. Additionally, the area serves as an internationally significant stopover for migratory birds and provides a stable habitat for otters. Visitors can explore the delta via extensive trail networks and observation platforms overlooking the rewilded landscape.
